How to Write a Short Story

Hi kids and adults!

If you want to know how to write a short story, go no further than right here!

First, prepping:

1. Create a main character(s):

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Looks:

Personality:

Likes:

Dislikes:

If the characters have magic powers, add:

Powers:

2. Create five or six more background characters:

Names:

Ages:

Looks:

Personalities:

Likes:

Dislikes:

3. Answer these questions:

What’s the story about?

What happens?

How would it end?

Would it end good or bad?

Is it fiction or non-fiction?

Is it horror or fantasy?

Is it helpful or entertaining?

What ages and levels it it for?

4. Plot:

Background- Introduction of characters and setting

Rising Action- Events leading up to main problem/conflict

Climax- When the problem reaches a high point and the characters realize they need to fix it before the time runs out

Falling Action- Characters work to solve the problem/conflict try and fail, try and fail, try and fail…

Resolution- The end of the story, the solving of the problem/conflict if it has a happy ending

5. Writing

-Rough Draft-

Write out everything from the plot after everything above is filled out and you know what genre, all the character information, the villian and the hero, the setting, date and time.

-Revising-

After everything is written, spellcheck it, fix any errors, and re-write it.

-Final Copy-

Revise the revised copy and write/type it neatly, this will be your final copy.

You can use this method, or, if you are a natural writer, like me, and can just write, then do that, but it is helpful to keep a chart of your characters, and their powers or personalities.
